Communication Skills Video Suite
These videos are suitable for clinicians working in multiple healthcare settings, and they also form a foundation for the Supervision Skills training. The topics are divided into three bundles: (Core Skills, Communication Challenges and Communication with Colleagues), and consist of four teaching videos and eight demonstration role-plays in total. The role-play videos all finish with a dynamic de-brief discussion to summarise the learning points, which offers a practical and engaging overview of the material.
Bundle 1 – Core Skills
Pillars of Connection: The Elements of Effective Communication
This video covers the essential building blocks of effective patient centred communication, including topics such as body language, empathy techniques, structure and staying connected to the patient.
First Impressions Matter: Initiating Positive Patient Relationships
In this video, we discuss the importance of first impressions, and provide practical tips for confidently starting a consultation. This is followed by a 30-second demonstration role-play Of the skills.
Balancing Time and Empathy: Mastering Effective Consultations
In this video, we focus on how to structure a consultation to balance effective time management whilst simultaneously being attentive to the patient’s needs. We introduce “The Goblet Model” as a way to balance hearing the patient’s story with time management.
Role-play: How toTake a Patient-centred History Efficiently
This 7-minute role-play demonstrates how to integrate key relationship-building skills with gathering the medical information necessary to make a differential diagnosis using the Goblet Model as described in the “Balancing Time and Empathy” video.
Bundle 2 – Communication Challenges: Anger, Boundaries and Unwelcome News
De-escalate Anger: Confidently Handle Challenging Interactions at Work
This 15-minute teaching video offers a detailed look at how to respond and manage an angry interaction. The REBELS acronym is explained (Recognise, Empathise, Boundaries, Emphasise, Language, Solutions) and helpful tips are outlined to give the viewer a selection of powerful tools for managing challenging interactions at work.
Role-play: Responding to Anger
Using the REBELS principles, this role-play demonstrates a clinician skilfully handling an angry conversation with a patient who is frustrated and angry for being kept waiting.
Speak Up: Communicating Assertively and Holding a Boundary
This 12-minute teaching video explains how to stand up for ourselves in a professional setting. The video reviews the skills of connection, and the four steps of holding a boundary. There is some repetition in this video (with video 5), but we feel it’s useful to review these skills for this tricky topic, in order to embed the learning.
Role-play: Speaking up-Setting Boundaries at Work
This role-play video demonstrates how to be assertive with a colleague who is taking advantage of shared collegiality by repeatedly asking for time off over the lunchbreak.
Role-play followed by teaching: Giving Unwelcome News for Medical Practitioners
In this 7-minute roleplay video, a clinician demonstrates how to communicate a diagnosis to a patient with unexpected cancer by focusing on the patient’s feelings and staying on their wavelength before discussing treatment options.
Roleplay followed by teaching: Unwelcome News after an Accident.
In this 5-minute role-play video, viewers will see a demonstration of “Feelings before Frameworks” in the context of delivering unwelcome news in an emergency situation.
Bundle 3 – Communication with Colleagues
Roleplay: Tackling Tough Topics-Approaching a Colleague about their Health.
In this role-play video, a concerned colleague approaches a co-worker about their health, which appears to be negatively impacting their work.
Role-play: Respectful Feedback in Practice
In this role-play video, viewers will see an example of how to provide respectful feedback to a senior colleague who is not ‘handing over’ properly. The focus is on demonstrating how to give feedback in a respectful manner despite the seniority of the colleague.
Roleplay: Standing your Ground-Being Assertive within a Hierarchy
This role-play demonstrates how to calmly let a senior colleague know that more support is needed when a junior clinician is feeling out of their depth. Viewers will learn techniques to stand up for themselves in a dignified way and how to state a bottom line, even when the colleague is being unhelpful.
Supervision Skills Video Suite
These videos are suitable for any senior clinician who is involved in the teaching and/or supervision of junior colleagues. There are three videos that summarise the principles and practice of supervision as it applies to the healthcare environment, and two practical role-play demonstrations of how to give feedback that is adjusted for the level of insight and the anxiety levels of the trainee.
Navigating Supervision: An Introduction with Key Skills for Success.
This is a 10-minute teaching video that covers the function of supervision, including how to manage the tension of being supportive while still giving feedback about something that needs to change. Different styles of supervision are outlined, including a discussion about when these might be employed. The ‘learning zone’ is discussed, providing insights into how to create an environment that fosters professional development and growth.
Mastering the Art of Feedback: Strategies for Productive Conversations.
This 8-minute teaching video provides useful principles and tips for giving feedback to an underperforming trainee. The video introduces the IBIS model (Invite and involve, Balance, Intention, Simple), which provides a structured approach for delivering constructive feedback that is clear and actionable. The video also introduces the ‘Support and Challenge’ graph, which offers guidance for getting the right balance for the trainee.
Role-playing Difficult Feedback: How to Handle Defensive Responses.
This 9-minute role-play video demonstrates how to give feedback to a junior colleague who is defensive and lacks insight. The video highlights how to stay connected with them, at the same time as identifying the consequences of underperforming. The video includes a debrief of the role-play.
Feedback with Heart: A Role-play Demonstrating Supportive Communication in Healthcare
This role-play video demonstrates how to give feedback when a supportive approach is needed. It shows a scenario where a supervisor gives feedback to an anxious new trainee on their difficulties with time management. The video highlights the importance of using an empathic style, at the same time as being specific, concise, and respectful.
When Things go Wrong: Effective Communication Strategies for De-briefing a Critical Incident.
In this 9-minute teaching video, viewers will learn how to effectively de-brief a critical incident by having constructive conversations with a clinician who has made a mistake or experienced an unexpected sub-optimal outcome. A simple and highly functional structure will be explained, including practical strategies and techniques that can be used during these difficult conversations to ensure that clarity and understanding are optimised.
Wellbeing Video Suite
These videos can be used as a standalone resource. Alternatively, we suggest that they are best utilised as pre-views, to be watched as self-directed learning in advance of our face-to-face interactive well-being workshops. The four wellbeing videos cover the following topics:
Understanding Burnout
This 8-minute video provides a thorough understanding of burnout including how it differs from other mental health conditions. Burnout is examined both from an individual perspective, and from a systemic/organisational point of view.
Preventing and Managing Burnout
This 10-minute video features an explanation of what the evidence has shown to be helpful in tackling burnout. Both systemic and individual factors are covered, and some practical self-help techniques are suggested.
Managing Worried Thinking.
This short video covers how to respond to unwelcome intrusive thoughts which often drive anxiety. Practical examples are covered, with some simples techniques for supporting a healthier response to worried thinking.
Mindfulness and Self Compassion.
This video provides a clear and practical explanation of both mindfulness and self-compassion as accessible self-help tools. A secular and logical approach is used to provide simple strategies that will help to calm the nervous system and bring balance to stressful situations.
